In an interview with BBC Sport, Fabregas was asked whether he considered himself better than 20-year-old Bellingham of the same age.

The retired midfield maestro neither confirmed nor denied the claim but was keen to praise the Real Madrid player for his performances in the game.

“Difficult to say, isn’t it? I started very young, I had a big impact at Arsenal playing Champions League finals at the age of 19,” said Fabregas, adding: “I won the European Championship at the age of 21 , FA Cups, fought for leagues and was part of the Invincibles, even though I wasn’t playing, competing (with them) and experiencing it all.”

He concluded by acknowledging that Bellingham was a special player for his age.

“The impact he has had at this age is not normal. For that reason I would put him in the same category as the Rooneys, Messis and Cristianos at that age.”
