Saints seal deal with defender

Southampton have confirmed the arrival of Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who signs a four-year contract with Manchester City.

The 22-year-old centre-back joined on loan from City last summer and played a key role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

This triggered a clause in the agreement that made his move permanent, meaning Harwood-Bellis’ new deal will commence from today.

He said: “It’s no secret how much I enjoyed my time here last season, so I’m delighted to officially be a Southampton player for the new season.

“The feeling of bringing this club back to the Premier League and playing in front of these fans week in, week out was amazing.

“I’ve learned so much over the last two years and grown so much as a player and a person. To now have the opportunity to represent this club in the Premier League is really special and I can’t wait to get started and see all the lads again.”

The Ligt update

There is an update on the arrival of Bayern Munich star player Matthijs de Light by Manchester United.

More from West Ham

West Ham’s technical director Tim Steidten also spoke about the club’s transfer strategy this summer.

He said: “England is our home base so we need to be active in that market if possible.

“We are also looking elsewhere. That is part of our job to find the right players for West Ham United.

“We are trying to build the squad. We are not limiting ourselves to one position – we are looking at all areas.

“I can’t give you details, but it’s definitely going to be a busy summer for us.

“The owner and the board have done an excellent job over the past few years, so financially we are in a good position.”

Hammers work on movements

West Ham’s new manager Julen Loptegui has insisted the club is working on bringing in new players.

He said: “We are working to improve. The first thing is that we are happy with the players, but we are going to try to improve.

“We have to work very hard to be ready for the Premier League and we want players as soon as possible, but it is not easy.”
