Woman, 29, drowns near barge terminal on British Columbia island

A 29-year-old woman has died after drowning on Savary Island.

Powell River RCMP were called to a report of a drowning near a barge terminal on Savary Island around 8 a.m. Sunday (June 30).

The British Columbia Coroners Service is investigating, but police say there is no suspicious drowning incident and there is no risk to public safety.

A recent report from the BC Coroners Service found that more than 100 people died from drowning in British Columbia in 2023.

According to the report, the number of drowning deaths peaks in July, with an average of 13.1 deaths per month between 2013 and 2023.
