Minnesota stylists must now learn how to work with textured hair

A new law went into effect this week requiring cosmetologists in Minnesota to be trained in cutting and styling textured hair, making Minnesota the fourth state to pass such a law.

Research from hair care company Pivot Point found that 65 percent of people in the US have textured hair, but not every stylist knows what to do with that type of hair behind the chair.

Valencia Montgomery Johnson is a cosmetology professor at Aveda Arts and Sciences Institutes who testified at the state Capitol in support of the bill. She spoke about it with MPR News anchor Cathy Wurzer.
