Can NLEX Still Get Jonel Policarpio at No. 6?

NLEX hopes to play its cards well if it picks sixth in the upcoming PBA Rookie Draft.

Team manager Virgil Villavicencio said during the July 14 event at Glorietta that the work for new coach Jong Uichico is starting. The Road Warriors are now looking to get immediate help from the draft to create a winning culture for Season 49.

Villavicencio said that among the rookies who trained for NLEX are Jonel Policarpio of La Salle, CJ Cansino of the University of the Philippines, Paolo Hernandez of Mapua and Miguel Corteza of St. Benilde.

But the former coach, who is now officially with the team, declined to say whether NLEX would use its first-round pick on any of the four.

“They trained with us last Tuesday. Coach Jong was not in training since Gilas Pilipinas just arrived on Wednesday. But we will give him a scouting report on the training and see how it goes,” said Villavicencio, who attended the Draft Combine at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Policarpio admitted that NLEX showed interest in him after he won the MVP award at the end of the two-day event at the Ynares Sports Arena.

The Road Warriors had a bumper crop of rookies last year, including Enoch Valdez, Jhan Nermal, Dominic Fajardo and Richie Rodger.

Unfortunately, NLEX could not overcome the barrier and was left behind in the play-offs.

Even the arrival of leading scorer Robert Bolick wasn’t enough to turn the tide for the franchise, as the Road Warriors failed to advance to the Commissioner’s Cup playoffs last season.
