‘I have to keep improving’: Washington Sundar has set his sights on Allrounder position

Ravindra Jadeja’s retirement from T20Is has left a spot open for the role of spin bowling all-rounder and Washington Sundar is keen to cement his place. Sundar is currently touring Zimbabwe with a young Indian team for a five-match series, which the tourists lead 2-1.

Sundar’s career was hampered by injuries, a dip in form and stiff competition. He had a forgettable IPL 2024 in which he played just two matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad, taking one wicket while contributing nothing with the bat.

Sundar, who bowls offspin, remains on the radar of the team management for his potential and was even in contention for a spot in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad, which eventually went to Axar Patel.

The tour of Zimbabwe offers him the opportunity to enhance his reputation.

“I have to do what I am good at and what I can do, especially with the preparation,” Sundar told reporters after his performance that won him player of the match against Zimbabwe in the 3rd T20I.

“I have to be there every day and give my 100 percent. And I have not compromised on that. And I have always given 100 percent in every training session and of course in matches. That way I stay in the present. It is very important to be in the present and to perform well regularly. I am also very confident. It is a great opportunity for me to play for India, a great blessing. I have to do my job really well. Like I said, I have to keep preparing where I have to and get better in all aspects of the game. That way everything will be taken care of,” he added.

Sundar took 3/15 from four overs as India restricted Zimbabwe to 159/6, defending 183, at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.

India opted to bat first and made a strong start with the opening pair of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal putting on 55 runs in the Powerplay overs.

“We started well. That helps any team in any match. I think we scored 55 runs in the first six overs without losing a wicket. That really set a nice tone for us to keep playing in that rhythm,” Sundar said.

India suffered a nasty surprise in the series opener when Zimbabwe defeated them to take a 1-0 lead. Sundar attributed the performance to unusual circumstances and said the players are learning more with every match.

“The way you (Zimbabwe) started, hats off! We are learning every day. But yeah, when we come here to Zimbabwe and play cricket, most of us, I think, try to get a lot more information about the wickets here, about the conditions. The first game, I mean, we didn’t really have that much information, as much as we have now. So there is obviously a lot to learn and today we played on a different wicket, so it played a lot better I would say for batting. You keep getting lessons and learning moments after every game. In that way, we are all lucky to be able to play this sport,” he said.
