The Gipsy Kings starring Nicolas Reyes returns to Boston’s Boch Center Wang Theatre

International superstars Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes will be touring this fall, returning to the Boch Center Wang Theatre on Saturday, October 26, 2024. The Grammy Award winners are known for their blend of Catalan rumba, flamenco, salsa and pop for an unforgettable evening of music that will have audiences dancing from the first chord to the last. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 12, 2024.

About Nicolas Reyes

Nicolas Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of The Gipsy Kings for over 30 years. Over the past three decades, they have dominated the World Music charts, selling over 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation, The Best of The Gipsy Kings, spent over a year on the charts after its release, and their ninth studio album, Savor Flamenco, won the 2013 Grammy for Best World Music Album.

This iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father, Jose Reyes, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata (whose fan base included Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso). When the pair split, the elder Reyes gained even more popularity when he started his own band, backed by his son, called Los Reyes. In later years, Nicolas struck out on his own and began playing in the city of Arles in the south of France. He toured the country, busking in Saint-Tropez and playing wherever he could. After adopting the ever-changing gypsy lifestyle, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became The Gipsy Kings.

The band’s music has merged with popular culture. In addition to the above accolades, the traveling Gipsy Kings have played some of the world’s biggest stages, from the Hollywood Bowl to the Royal Albert Hall, as well as on the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was featured in the film The Big Lebowski and the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the film’s popular Randy Newman-penned theme, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” The Gipsy Kings were recently featured in a Big Lebowski spin-off, The Jesus Rolls, with Reyes appearing personally with director and star, John Turturro, for some of the promotion.

As active as this remarkable collective remains, they are also confident about the future of their legacy. “Even though it’s been 30 years, we want to keep making new music, because it’s our life. It’s who we are,” says Nicolas Reyes. “But I think there will come a time when we will pass The Gipsy Kings on to our sons.”
30 years is an eternity in pop music, but the story of The Gipsy Kings with Nicolas Reyes has the depth to endure. Theirs is a music that spans generations, in tune with the sounds of their ancestors – Spanish Roma who fled the Catalonia region during the Spanish Civil War – and reflects the gitanos’ vibrant, eclectic and peripatetic history.
