Workers repairing Badrinath Highway in Uttarakhand narrowly escape boulders

Workers clearing debris from the Badrinath highway had a narrow escape after boulders fell on them in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.

A video of workers running downhill to save their lives as boulders and concrete debris are thrown out of the mouth of the tunnel has surfaced on social media platforms. The incident took place on July 10.

Speak with ANNI-Chamoli District Magistrate (DM) Himanshu Khurana said, “Badrinath Highway 07 has been blocked due to heavy debris falling from the hillock on the road in Bhanerpani, Joshimath.”

Almost a week ago, two tourists from Hyderabad died after they were hit by boulders following a landslide. The accident occurred on the Badrinath National Highway near Chatwapeepal, between Gauchar and Karnaprayag.

The landslide has disrupted connectivity to Badrinath, Joshimath, Niti, Mana, Tapovan, Malari, Lata, Raini, Pandukeshwar and Hemkund Sahib. More than 2,000 travellers and pilgrims, who are on their way to or returning from Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib, are still stuck on the highway.
