Ramiz Raja drops ‘better than Jasprit Bumrah’ comment as he praises Arshdeep Singh after heroics at 2024 T20 World Cup

Left-handed pacer Arshdeep Singh has been one of the standout players in India’s triumphant campaign at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. He finished joint-top wicket-taker with 17 scalps, along with Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi.

His impressive ability to remain calm under pressure and a keen willingness to learn have now earned him praise from former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup title as an unbeaten team on June 29.

Ramiz Raja hails Arshdeep Singh’s crucial role in India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph

Arshdeep played a crucial role in Team India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. He led a decisive over in the final, conceding just four runs and finishing with a stunning 2/20 against South Africa in Barbados.

Raja praised Arshdeep for his contribution to India’s historic title triumph and pointed out that Jasprit Bumrah, who won the Player of the Tournament award with 15 wickets, was the main bowler for Indian captain Rohit Sharma. However, Arshdeep learnt a lot from the best bowler without feeling overshadowed.

Ramiz Raja said in his YouTube channel ‘Ramiz Speaks’, “Bumrah ke hote hue, ye craft seekh bhi rahe hain, par unse dab nahi rahe hain (With Bumrah there, Arshdeep learns from him and doesn’t feel the pressure of Bumrah’s presence). It’s very important for him to back himself and prove that he is equal to Bumrah, if not better than him. So, challenging himself in that way is very important for Arshdeep’s growth because if he wants to compete with the world’s best bowler, then his own bowling will touch the sky.”

Raja praised Arshdeep’s ability to thrive in stressful situations, especially in death overs, where his strategic variations such as length balls and slower deliveries have been instrumental. The former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman noted that Arshdeep bowls intelligently in his line of work, making him a valuable asset to the Indian cricket team.

The commentator further noted, “He comes to bowl in do-or-die situations (death overs), like if he doesn’t deliver, the team loses and he can be dropped from the selection. But he bowls smartly, and going by his field, if he has to bowl length balls, slower balls can also bowl the slower bouncer. So, he gives a lot of advantage to his team.”

Ultimately, Raja said that the most important thing about Indian cricket is that there is improvement in the skill level of their bowlers every six months, saying that their bowlers are not falling apart or their performance is dropping. He further noted that the skill level of the Indian bowlers is going up and there is a willingness to learn, which is an important element that he finds in Arshdeep’s bowling.

The former Pakistan captain concluded by saying that all the Indian bowlers played their part in their T20 World Cup victory. Raja noted that some of the Indian bowlers were hit but most of them gave good performances with their tight bowling and smartness on flat tracks that tested your bowling quality, credibility and credentials in the recent mega ICC tournament.
