After former President John Dramani Mahama claimed that he introduced the Free SHS policy in 2015 under a progressive scheme, an old tweet by the National Democratic Congress leader resurfaced, labelling the policy as a misplaced priority.

The tweet by John Dramani Mahama’s official account in 2012 downplayed the need for the free Senior High School policy. In it, Mahama advocated for the implementation of free basic education for primary school pupils.

“Free SHS is a misplaced priority when primary school students are still paying school fees. Let’s make primary school free first,” his tweet read.

Netizens have drawn attention to the tweet following recent comments made by Mahama on the free SHS policy during his media event on Sunday, July 7.

Critics have questioned how Mahama can claim to have launched the Free SHS policy when his earlier reservations about its implementation were seen as disingenuous or lacking in good faith. The resurfaced old tweet contradicts his claim that he launched the policy.

During his meeting with the media, Mahama dismissed concerns that an NDC government would revoke the policy if it were to return to power. He assured the public and his supporters that the Free SHS policy would not be reversed or abolished if the NDC were to return to power.

“Free SHS has come to stay. No one can turn it back,” Mahama said during his meeting with the media in Accra.

“What we are saying is that we need to improve implementation, remove the bottlenecks, abolish the dual-track approach and decentralise the school meals programme,” he added.
