DVIDS – News – Repair and transfer of pumping station ‘important step forward’ for reducing flood risk TWT

The Tulsa District, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Tulsa County Drainage District 12 reached a major milestone in efforts to reduce flood risk to residents and businesses along the Tulsa-West Tulsa Levee with the transfer of four completed pump stations to Tulsa County Drainage District 12 on July 10.

Todd Kilpatrick, Tulsa-West Tulsa Levee Commissioner, Tulsa County Drainage District 12, accepted the completed repairs to Pump Stations #2, #3, #4 and #6 at the Tulsa County Drainage District 12 office in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.

“Pumping stations are vital to the drainage of stormwater behind the dike,” Kilpatrick said. “During the 2019 flood, we had to deploy 20 auxiliary pumps to handle the storm surge. So this is a major step forward in increasing the safety of citizens living behind the dike.”

Following the 2019 flood, the County of Tulsa began repairing six pump stations on the Tulsa-West Tulsa Levee, under the authority of Public Law 84-99.

Public Law 84-99 is the basic authority of the USACE to provide emergency response activities to support state, local, and tribal governments prior to, during, and after a flood. Combined, the four stations can pump 113,100 gallons of water per minute.

The Tulsa District is in the process of completing repairs to Pump Station #5 and Pump Station #7, which will increase the total capacity of the pump stations to more than 240,000 gpm.

“The completion and transfer of the pumps is a major step toward putting the pump stations into service to support any potential flooding,” said Loretta Turner, deputy district engineer for programs and project management for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tulsa District. “We are working to put the remaining pumps into service soon.”
