Bilt is dropping their Legacy Credit Card Portfolio, I just applied for a Wells Fargo card and got a bonus

I first got the Bilt Rewards Mastercard in November 2021. When the program launched, they were with another bank and in March 2022 they launched Wells Fargo. Wells did not buy the backbook. I suspect the lack of revolve by cardholders – early adopters like me are not a super profitable bunch! – led to this decision.

So there have been Bilt credit cards from two different issuers, even though all new cards in the past 27 months have been from Wells Fargo.

The old cards expire on December 31st. If you want to keep a Bilt card, you must reapply for the Wells product.

  • This option will appear in the Bilt app. If you accept it, you will be redirected to a pre-filled application.
  • You will receive 10,000 points if you register before August 31st (regardless of whether your application is approved or not)

I went through it and applied. This hurts me with Chase’s 5/24 limits, but I:

  • Keep my Bilt commitment. They have better transfer partners than anyone else, I love spending on the first of every month and I love their transfer bonuses. I have had 100% transfer bonuses or better with Air France KLM, Virgin Atlantic and Alaska (and kind of regret skipping Air Canada, Hawaiian). I love the Platinum perks like a free Blade helicopter transfer.
  • Finally tap to pay. The thing that probably stopped me the most from using the card was that I couldn’t use this feature.
  • Collect 10,000 extra points… which hopefully will later become 20,000 (or more) with a transfer partner.

When I applied, I got 10,000 points right away. I was also approved by Wells Fargo right away. I don’t have any cards with Wells Fargo right now and they gave me a $50,000 line of credit, which is great.

I find Bilt to be the most interesting and engaging program out there at the moment. They regularly introduce new features and partnerships, so I’m glad they decided to keep me as a co-brand cardmember.

The legacy card is still valid through December 31, 2024. They will eventually be shut down by their issuer. I guess if there’s one extra step I don’t like, it’s that autopay for the Wells card requires you to set up a separate Wells Fargo account, instead of it all being handled in the app.

Of course, there is no requirement for legacy cardmembers to apply for a new Wells Fargo card. The old card will still work through the end of the year, and there are plenty of ways to earn with Bilt outside of the co-brand.
