Canal rupture causes major flooding and disruptions

Chaos broke out in Outer Delhi’s Bawana district as a major breach in the Munak canal sub-branch caused severe flooding on Thursday. Residents were left wading through waist-high water, with inundated homes, schools and hospitals adding to the already dire situation.

Water Minister Atishi, who inspected the site of the breach, said that repair work was underway and was expected to be completed by Thursday evening. In the meantime, water supply was diverted to another branch of the canal. The canal, which carries Yamuna water from Haryana to Delhi, had breached its embankment between midnight and 2 am, severely affecting nearby areas of Bawana.

Emergency response teams, including engineers from Haryana and Delhi, are working on urgent repairs. Mobile pumps from various agencies were deployed to pump out the water and the National Disaster Response Force began evacuation efforts. Residents faced significant challenges, with basic services disrupted and families stranded waiting for aid.
