Here’s How Apple Intelligence Improves Your Writing in iOS 18

This fall, Apple Intelligence brings a host of powerful features to users. If you have a compatible device, you’ll be able to create original images on command, summon a supercharged new Siri, and use custom AI-created Genmoji.

Apple Intelligence also introduces new writing tools for iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and iPadOS 18, using AI to improve your writing performance across all your devices.

Apple Intelligence writing tools are available in every app you use on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. They’re not limited to just Apple apps.

As long as the app you’re using uses the standard text input system (which almost all third-party apps do), you can tap into Apple Intelligence in several ways.

Imagine you’re composing an email and you find it needs a serious overhaul. Or you’re working on a speech for work or school and you’re not happy with it. Maybe you could use some help with something as simple as an Instagram post.

In all these cases, Apple’s writing tools are ready to help. Here’s what they can do.

Rewrite text using preset styles or custom commands

Writing tools in Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence offers several preset styles that can be used to instantly rewrite your text in a specific tone. You can choose from three options:

  • Friendly
  • Professional
  • Short

Each preset is designed to make it as quick and easy as possible to rewrite your text.

But you’re not limited to these options alone. As with ChatGPT and other AI tools, Apple Intelligence also supports custom rewrite commands.

Apple’s writing tools have an option called “Describe your change.” Here you can enter commands like, “Make this read like a poem.”

Compose text from scratch with ChatGPT

Apple’s own writing tools won’t compose text for you. It can rewrite existing text, but it can’t compose something completely new like some other AI tools can.

Fortunately, this is where Apple Intelligence’s deep ChatGPT integration comes in handy. Baked right into existing AI writing tools, you can use ChatGPT to do what Apple can’t: compose text from scratch.

This integration is a seamless part of the Apple Intelligence experience. It’s completely native, with no additional installation or sign-up for an OpenAI account required. Text Composition Tools Are part of Apple Intelligence, but they are powered by ChatGPT instead of Apple.

Correct the text and provide advice on spelling and grammar

Like third-party tools like Grammarly, Apple Intelligence also offers proofreading tools that go beyond the system’s standard spell checking.

Proofreading leaves your writing completely intact, but Apple offers suggested revisions based on spelling and grammar issues. Consider this the option that requires the least amount of AI infusion.

Analyze and summarize text

Finally, Apple Intelligence can analyze your text and extract the key points.

Apple’s writing tools include two buttons: Summary and Highlights. These help you better tailor the content of your text to its context.

This can be useful with your own writing, as it can reveal whether you’re actually communicating what you meant. But more likely, it’s used in situations where you want a quick overview of text someone else has written, such as an email or article.

Apple Intelligence writing tools are designed for a variety of applications and needs.

Want something completely re-written? The system can do that for you. How about a revision of what you’ve already written? That’s easy too. Just need some proofreading? No problem.

By making these tools available at the system level, regardless of where you write text, Apple aims to make AI commonplace in a whole new way.
