Shelley Duvall dies at 75

Sadly, the actress has passed away. Not many details have been released about the circumstances of her death, which occurred at the age of 75.

Leading role in The shining gained her worldwide fame and love from all over the world, but it was another iconic film from 1980 that the world loved even more. Starring alongside veteran actor Robin Williams, the duo starred in Popeye.

Not many people know about the movie. However, on December 6, 1980, a live-action Popeye movie was released starring Robin Williams. Williams played the character of Popeye while Shelley Duvall played Olive Oyl in the movie.

Following the recent sad news of the actor’s passing, fans paid tribute to the veteran actress on X (formerly Twitter).

Although the film received average reviews, Popeye was a box office hit in 1980. Many loyal fans will remember Duvall as Olive Oyl opposite Robin Williams’ Popeye, which is certainly a positive way to remember someone.

Working with veteran director Stanley Kubrick in The shining, Duvall suffered immense pain, both physically and mentally, for her character Wendy Torrance.

A simple scene that became a nightmare for the actress. Duvall was best known for her role in The shining. But through the many tortures she endured, Duvall became an even stronger woman than before.

In the 1980 film, there’s a scene where Duvall’s character Wendy Torrance climbs up a flight of stairs backwards, armed with a baseball bat in her hand. Well, according to the actress, it took 127 takes to perfect that scene!

In an earlier interview (via FilmTalking), the actress had quite a bit to say about that scene and how everything becomes a blur after a certain number of takes!

I had never done more than, say, fifteen takes in my life. So it was a big change for me to do that many. After you do a certain amount, it kind of dies, and then another five takes or so, and it revives itself.

She continued:

And by then you know the scene like the back of your hand, you can’t make any mistakes in it and you forget about reality except what you’re doing.

Eventually, the scene was filmed, the movie was released, and the world found out who Shelley Duvall was really dating. The shining. Her film with Robin Williams, on the other hand, was greatly underrated.
