Nelly Furtado releases seventh studio album

Nelly Furtado’s comeback train makes a stop at lucky bird number 7.

The Victoria native has marked September 20 as the day her seventh studio album, which she has aptly titled “7,” will be released.

Her record label describes the highly anticipated project as “four years of artistic discovery,” which followed a period in which Furtado devoted most of her time to motherhood.

Last year, Furtado told The Canadian Press that the album was effectively finished.

She described her return to the recording studio as an experience fueled by a “community mindset,” working with fellow Canadians Alessia Cara and Charlotte Day Wilson and local producers WondaGurl and T-Minus.

No tracklist for the album has been announced yet.

The announcement of Furtado’s release comes after more than a year of his slow return to the entertainment industry.

During that time, the “I’m Like a Bird” and “Promiscuous” singer built a stronger social media presence, released a number of standalone singles and hosted the Juno Awards in Halifax this past March.

The album’s second single, “Corazón,” featuring Colombian band Bomba Estéreo, will be released Friday via digital sales and streaming services. The song is performed in English and Spanish and follows Furtado’s pop-driven “Love Bites,” featuring Tove Lo and SG Lewis, which came out in May.

In a social media post, Furtado described her 14-song album as “sort of random shells that might sound similar but aren’t similar at all.”

“You can’t listen to this album as some sort of audio background, or maybe you can, depending on how you enjoy music, but I don’t care if you skip tracks,” she wrote on Instagram.

“It’s up to you how you enjoy it.”
