The 49ers are known to have injury problems at the beginning of every season; most recently, Drake Jackson had to sit out.
The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday that they were placing the defensive end on the reserve/physically unable to perform list before the team’s season opener. The move effectively ended the player’s 2024 season before it even began. Although the team had hoped he could return at some point this year, SF is instead putting him on hold to free up a roster spot.
ESPN’s Field Yates was the first to announce the news, and the 49ers subsequently announced it.
Drake Jackson was injured last season and underwent knee surgery in January, meaning he began training camp as a PUP and has now been placed on the more permanent injured list – this frees up one of two needed roster spots for the 49ers https://t.co/N0RzQb3yjm

Drake Jackson, 23, has been recovering from patellar tendon surgery since January and hopes to be fully recovered in time for training camp. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened, and now he faces a lengthy absence before he can return to the field. The USC product has been out of action since Week 8 of the 2023 regular season with the knee injury.
“When you do a surgery like he did, I think (former 49ers OL Mike McGlinchey had a similar surgery), those are big surgeries,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said recently of Jackson’s surgery. “It’s hard to recover from and you never know how they’re going to respond. We always know it’s potentially going to take a long time, and it takes a long time.”
Jackson is entering his third year in the NFL and has six sacks, 21 combined tackles and nine pass breakups in 23 career games. He also has an interception to his name in 2022. Many of the 49ers fans were excited by his start to last season, when he recorded three sacks in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since then, the pass rusher has struggled to stay on the field as both injury and consistency concerns have reared their ugly heads.
The 2022 second-round draft pick is hoping for a comeback in 2025, but if he wants to make a splash with the 49ers, he’ll face another steep climb.
#49ers Draft class 2022:
2nd round: Drake Jackson, PUP for the end of the season
3rd place: Ty Davis-Price, not in the squad
3rd: Danny Gray, 1 career catch
4.: Spencer Burford fights with Dominick Puni for the starting position
5.: Samuel Womack, 70 defensive snaps in 2023
6.: Nick Zakelj, 12 career offensive points …— Josh Dubow (@JoshDubowAP) 8 August 2024
In a corresponding roster move, the 49ers signed safety Tracy Walker III to a one-year deal. The Red & Gold are also reportedly bringing in DE Jonathan Garvin to take Jackson’s place.
