7-run inning energizes Wild Things

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Wild Things scored seven runs in the third inning to defeat Windy City 9-5 on Saturday night at Ozinga Field.

With the win and Gateway’s 15-3 loss to Evansville, Washington’s lead in the Frontier League West Division increased to seven games with 19 regular-season games remaining.

The seven-run inning was the Wild Things’ second of the week and is the highest score in an inning this season.

Tyreque Reed opened the third with a single, got to second base on a wild pitch from Michael Barker (3-6) and scored on a double from Wagner Lagrange to tie the score at 2-2. Brandon McIlwain brought home Lagrange and Andrew Czech with a double to give the Wild Things a 4-2 lead. A double from Jalen Miller brought in two more runs, and Tommy Caufield brought home Miller with a single and Lagrange brought home Caufield with a single to make it 8-2.

Kobe Foster (8-1) pitched six innings for the win. He allowed four hits and three runs. The left-hander struck out seven times and managed one walk.

Nick McDonald and Ryan Munoz followed Foster to the mound.

Reed had an RBI double in the fifth.

Brennen Dorighi of Windy City hit a solo home run.

Miller, Washington’s second baseman, and manager Tom Vaeth were ejected in the bottom of the third inning after Foster was booed for a balk.

The Wild Things improved their away record to 28-9.
