The name that topped most lists of interest this week was Trey Lance. Acquired via a trade in late summer 2023, Lance has largely been an enigma on the quarterback depth chart until now. The 2024 preseason offers Cowboys fans their best chance to see the former No. 3 pick. But those viewers will have to wait until Cooper Rush, Dallas’ current QB2, does his thing.
Rush, widely considered the best quarterback not named Dak Prescott, led the Cowboys on their first drive of the day. Rush completed 3 of 4 passes for 44 yards and three scores. The highlight of the drive was a short-thrown 43-yard pass down the sideline to receiver Jalen Brooks. Brooks handled the ball well and held his own in the wide receiver battle in Oxnard.
From the second drive to the end of the game, Lance was the quarterback under center. Things played out similarly to training camp. Lance showed flashes of potential here and there, but he let too many passes slip and missed too many of his throws. His anticipation and processing speed also seemed to plague Lance, leading many to believe the battle for the backup spot was over.
Aside from Lance’s presence in the pocket and his ability to break through, it was hard to find positives for the quarterback in his fourth year.
