All-time world record in the men’s 400 m race after Quincy Hall wins Olympic gold

Quincy Hall’s final push in the 400-meter final on August 7 at the Stade de France at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris earned the 26-year-old the gold medal.

Hall, who won bronze at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, became the first American to win the 400 meters since LaShawn Merritt at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Hall restores the U.S. team’s dominance in the event after the Americans won gold in the men’s 400 meters at every Olympic Games from 1984 to 2008.

But America had kept a clean sheet in the event at two of the last three Olympics. Merritt’s bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 is the only medal the U.S. team had won during that time before Hall’s performance in the 400-meter final.

Hall’s sprint is the fourth fastest of all time and the third fastest by an American.

Here is the current world record in the 400-meter run.
