Extreme heat can affect almost anyone, but especially those who have no choice but to work in it.
At Kwik Kar Vista Ridge in Lewisville, mechanics know that the outside temperature affects the inside temperature.
“When it’s cold, it’s cold,” said mechanic Juan Contreras. “When it’s hot, it’s hot.”
Especially now, with the triple-digit heat, they have to take precautions.
“Always drink water,” said mechanic Alfredo De La Cruz.
The owner has posted a notice to customers and also informed them of what to expect from the mechanics.
“It’s pretty cramped,” said Ray Bowens, owner of Kwik Kar Vista Ridge. “Sometimes there’s no ventilation and by the time the vehicles arrive, they’re already hot.”
That’s why he makes sure that mechanics can take breaks at any time to ensure their safety.
“Make sure you stay hydrated,” Bowens said. “Take frequent breaks. I have a little room back there with air conditioning that they can go to, take a break, cool down and then come back. We also have fans.”
Bowens has also posted a notice to warn customers that the safety breaks may impact their wait time. While it’s a little inconvenient, Bowens says most customers are OK with it.
“They understand that we want to keep not only their car healthy, but also the health of our employees,” he said.
