Brian Cashman makes an enemy of Jasson Dominguez years in advance

The New York Yankees have a top prospect they have coveted more than any other player in baseball in recent years. He has earned the nickname “The Martian” for his otherworldly abilities on the baseball field. He hit four home runs in eight major league games last year and has destroyed minor league pitchers when healthy this season.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m talking about 25th-ranked baseball prospect Jasson Dominguez. Sure.

Although Dominguez has been off-limits in any transfers in recent years, Yankees owner Brian Cashman is not taking his value too seriously, having recently said he needs to get the outfielder playing time in the Bronx.

Dominguez was injured for much of the 2024 season. Many expected him to be inserted into the Yankees’ lineup as an everyday outfielder after returning from injury. That was the reason New York did not add a big-name outfielder and kept Jazz Chisholm in the infield.

These were the expectations and not the reality.

Yankees sportswriter Gary Phillips reported that Cashman said there was “no chance right now” for Jasson Domínguez, but “it’s nice to know he’s there.”

Forgiveness?

The Yankees’ top talent has no place in the major leagues? A talent like Dominguez is the kind of talent that an organization would rearrange everything on its major league team to accommodate. The Orioles made room for Jackson Holliday and the Reds for Elly De La Cruz. There’s no reason why Dominguez should be a supporting player in the Yankees’ plans for 2024.

With Juan Soto hitting the open market in a few months, the Yankees must do their best to maintain a good relationship with the player who will replace Soto if he decides to leave New York.

The comments Cashman made recently are not helping to build a good relationship. Dominguez performed well in the major leagues last year and has overwhelmed the minor league pitchers this year. He is their top talent. To mention him as an afterthought when he has proven he is ready for the major leagues goes far beyond his talent.
