The launch of OpenAI’s new GPT-4o Omni model in May boosted ChatGPT’s app revenue. After a big jump following the model’s release, the mobile version of OpenAI’s chatbot has now seen its highest-grossing month yet. The app generated $28 million in net revenue on the App Store and Google Play in July, according to data from app intelligence firm Appfigures.
Note that net revenue represents the amount OpenAI keeps after paying in-app purchase fees from Apple and Google. Additionally, the company noted that Apple’s App Store accounted for 83% of app revenue – a figure that has increased 20% since June.
Before taking into account app store fees, ChatGPT’s app generated gross revenue of $28.9 million in May, $34 million in June and $39.9 million in July.
GPT-4o allowed ChatGPT to process text, voice, and video, as well as improving response times and interrupting the chatbot, making interactions with the AI feel more human and natural, among other things.
Demand for this new technology drove the ChatGPT app’s revenue growth by 40% in May, according to Appfigures. And while that growth has slowed slightly since then, revenue continues to grow at a healthy pace.
Appfigures estimates that ChatGPT gained two million new paying subscribers due to the revenue the app generated in July – another record for the mobile app.
With the launch of ChatGPT’s new enhanced voice mode, which offers near-realistic real-time interactions, Appfigures expects further growth in the coming months.
