“Extremely difficult”: Director of “Haunted Mansion” talks about the flop of the Disney film
Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien admits he has mixed feelings about the film’s 2023 release.
Disney made huge profits in 2024
2023 was a difficult year at the box office. Disney, normally an industry leader, saw poor box office performances, be it with Marvel Studios or its animations, such as The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quatumania, Indiana Jones and the Dial of FateAnd Elementary were not the big hits the studio expected. In the end, Universal Pictures overtook Disney as the highest-grossing studio of 2023. However, 2024 turned out to be better and brought Disney back to the top.
So far, Disney is the first studio to cross the $3 billion mark at the box office worldwide this year, Variety confirmed. The titles that helped the House of Mouse were the recently released Deadpool and Wolverine, Inside Out 2which, with a total of 1.5 billion dollars, is the only film to have exceeded the 1 billion dollar mark so far, Planet of the Apes: KingdomAnd The first omen.
These films aren’t the only big titles on Disney’s 2024 slate. Vaiana 2 – The Great Adventure will premiere later this year, as well as Alien: RomulusAnd Mufasa – The Lion Kingwill give Disney even more influence at the box office. In addition, Deadpool and Wolverine isn’t far from crossing the $1 billion mark itself. The superhero film has broken several R-rated records and has currently grossed $852 million worldwide (via The Numbers). In less than six months, Disney can add millions (or billions) more to its name, especially given the price hikes of its new streaming platform.
