Drake shed light on his former romance with Serena Williams in newly released footage from a studio session.
The 37-year-old Canadian rapper hinted that he wrote his 2016 single “Too Good” for the famous tennis player when he shared a never-before-seen video of himself talking to his mother Sandi Graham about the inspiration for the song.
“I’m pretty heavy with a few joints, but this is more about me and Serena,” Drake said of the song, which features Rihanna and is included on his fourth studio album, “Views.”
“It’s funny because when I write songs about women, I also write songs for them. So I know what kind of song to write,” he continued.
“If I’m going to talk about them, I’m going to at least do them the honor of writing them a song that they like. So I know Serena very well and I know she’s going to hear it loud and clear, but she’s also not going to hate me for it because it’s lighthearted.”
When Graham asked if “Serena” was “seating anyone else,” the five-time Grammy winner quickly replied, “I don’t know, mom.”
The 42-year-old tennis champion began a relationship with her now-husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, shortly after she and Drake were spotted kissing in August 2015.
Sources denied at the time that the two were together, but told Page Six that they were already a couple before.
“Serena briefly dated Drake in 2011 and although it didn’t end well, they have remained friends ever since,” an insider said.
“He has been by her side at many tournaments recently, including at Wimbledon in July, where he sat in her box next to her sister Venus (Williams).”
Williams and Ohanian, 41, announced their engagement in December 2016 and the couple married in November 2017.
The couple welcomed their first daughter, Olympia, in September 2017.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner gave birth to her second daughter Adira in August 2023.
