Drake has finally confirmed that his 2016 song “Too Good” was inspired by his ex-girlfriend Serena Williams.
The rapper was already in a relationship with the tennis superstar from around 2010 to 2015. Drake has now revealed that the song he and Rihanna released in 2016 is about him and Williams.
Drake has released some archival footage and in one video he can be seen talking to his mother Sandi Graham in a recording studio, confirming that “Too Good” is about the new cosmetics mogul.
“I smoke a few joints, but this is more about me and Serena,” Drake said when his mother asked him why he alludes to past romances in his songs.
“That’s what I thought,” Graham replied.
Drake stressed to his mother that Williams would not “hate” him for the song – which is about being “too good” for a lover – because it is “lighthearted”.
“When I write songs about women,” said the “Hotline Bling” singer, “I also write songs for them so I know what kind of songs to write.”
“If I’m going to talk about them, I’m going to at least do them justice by singing them a song they like, okay?” Drake continued. “I know Serena very well and I know she’s going to hear it loud and clear, but she’s also not going to hate me for it because it’s lighthearted.”
Drake’s mother then reminded her son that Serena is “seeing someone else,” to which he jokingly replied, “I don’t know, mom.”
Graham’s reference is likely a reference to Williams’ current husband Alexis Ohanian. She has been with Ohanian since 2015 and the two married in 2017. The couple have daughters Olympia and Adira together.
Drake had previously regularly attended Williams’ tennis matches.
“@SerenaWilliams I can’t wait to put this on you and make you sweat… during our game this weekend,” he tweeted to her in 2011.
