Drake reveals in never-before-seen footage that ‘Too Good’ is about Serena Williams

drake reveals who “Too Good” is really about.

On Tuesday, the 37-year-old Canadian rapper released 100 gigabytes of never-before-seen content from his personal archives, including images, videos and some unreleased tracks. Newly released studio footage shows that his 2016 song “Too Good,” in which he raps about his “love” for someone taken for granted, is about Serena Williams42.

In the video, Drake tells his mother, who is not in the picture, that “Too Good” is about “me and Serena,” to which she replies, “I figured as much.”

“If I’m going to talk about (women), I’m at least going to do them justice by singing them a song they like,” Drake says. “So I know Serena very well and I know she’s going to hear it loud and clear, but she’s not going to hate me for it either, because it’s lighthearted.”

At the end of the clip, Drake’s mother reminds him that Williams has already moved on to someone else. Drake shrugs this off, responding, “I don’t know, mom.” Williams was with her now-husband. Alexis Ohanian at the time of the song’s release.

In “Too Good,” Drake raps: “The years go by too fast / I can’t keep count / How long did we last? / I feel guilty asking / This can’t be the way it ends / We gotta make time for this.”

The final verse ends with the words: “And I want to tell you my intentions / I want to do the things that I mention / I want to benefit from the friendship / I want to get the late night message from you, from you / I put my hands around you / I need to get a grip on you.”

The relationship and potential feud between Drake and Williams dates back to 2011, when he tweeted, “@serenawilliams I can’t wait to put it on you and make you sweat… during our game this weekend.”

He then referenced her in his 2013 song “Worst Behavior,” rapping: “I’m with my whole set, tennis matches in the booth/I swear I could beat Serena if she played left-handed.”

Over the years, Drake has been seen supporting Williams at her matches, including the Rogers Cup and the US Open in 2015. This year TMZ caught them making out. He supported her again at Wimbledon in 2018, a year after she married Ohanian.

In 2022, Drake started taking shots at the couple. “In the middle of the ocean”, he rapped: “Side note, Serena, your man is a groupie / He claims we ain’t got a problem but / Nah, boo, it’s like you came for sushi.”

But Williams has also been throwing shots lately. During a panel discussion at BEING Festival 2024 in July, Williams called Kendrick Lamar‘S “Not like us” the “hit of the summer” that apparently represents Lamar’s side Rap Beef with Drake. In “Not Like Us,” Lamar mentions the tennis star’s name and sings “better not speak on Serena” to further provoke Drake.

“I love that song. It’s like the hit of the summer,” Williams said at the time. “When they play that jam, I jam. That jam jams.”

Later this month Williams danced on stage to “Not Like Us” during the alignment of the ESPY Awards 2024“Don’t pick a fight with Kendrick (Lamar),” she said at the time.

Williams and Ohanian share two daughters — 6 years old Olympics and 1 year old Adira.
