Press release on General Dynamics’ electric boat
General Dynamics Electric Boat, a business unit of General Dynamics, announced that it has been awarded an undefined contract modification valued at $1.3 billion that will enable Electric Boat to purchase long-lead materials for Virginia-class Block VI submarines as specified in the U.S. Department of Defense contract award.
“This contract modification sends a critical demand signal and allows our suppliers to invest in the capacity and materials needed to increase production volumes. Continued funding of the supply base is essential to achieving the high production rate required by the Navy for the entire submarine enterprise.” said Kevin Graney, President of General Dynamics Electric Boat
Virginia-class submarines are designed from the ground up to meet the full range of 21st century mission requirements, including anti-submarine and surface warfare, as well as special operations support. General Dynamics Electric Boat is the prime contractor and lead design yard for the Virginia-class, building them in partnership with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia.
General Dynamics Electric Boat designs, builds, repairs and modernizes nuclear submarines for the US Navy. The company, based in Groton, Connecticut, employs over 23,000 people.
