Fort Collins police investigate bomb threat at transit center Tuesday

No explosives were found during an investigation into a bomb threat at the South Transit Center in Fort Collins on Tuesday.

According to police, a man got off a transit bus at the South Transit Center near the intersection of Harmony Road and College Avenue shortly before noon on Tuesday, placed three bags on the platform and told a nearby security guard that there was a bomb in one of the bags.

Police were notified and the Northern Colorado Bomb Disposal Unit responded, but investigators did not discover any explosives, according to a press release.

The investigation lasted about six hours, during which time transit center staff suspended operations and the rail line and pathways surrounding the transit center, including the entrance on Fossil Boulevard, were closed as a precaution, the release said. A commercial building near the transit center and a construction site directly adjacent to the transit center were ordered closed while bomb disposal personnel conducted the investigation, the release said, and a train was stopped on the tracks near Prospect Road, but railroad crossings were not closed.

Fort Collins patrol officers spotted the suspect near the transit center. He was arrested and charged with making a false statement to possess explosives (a Class 5 felony) and obstructing public transit (a misdemeanor), police said.
