The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department announced Thursday that it is working with the Internal Revenue Service to launch the IRS Direct File program in New Mexico in time for the 2025 tax season.
The program allows taxpayers to file their federal tax returns directly with the IRS for free.
“We are pleased to work with the IRS to ensure taxpayers have this great new tool available when they file their taxes next year,” Tax and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke said in a press release.
Taxpayers in New Mexico can already file their state income tax returns for free through TRD’s Taxpayer Access Point. Direct File is designed to simplify that process by allowing taxpayers to import their information from federal forms into their TAP return.
“This collaboration with the IRS will simplify the tax filing process for New Mexico residents. The Direct File program provides taxpayers with a free, reliable and efficient way to manage their federal and state tax returns,” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in the press release.
Taxpayers may continue to use commercial services or file their tax return on paper, but TRD recommends electronic filing whenever possible due to faster processing and accuracy.
