Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center temporarily closed for renovations – VVNG.com

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (VVNG.com) – In July, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved the final phase of the High Desert Detention Center (HDDC).

This expanded the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s correctional facility capacity by 353 beds. Due to this expansion, and with the support of the Board of Supervisors, we will temporarily close the Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center (GHRC) to allow for remodeling.

The facility is being remodeled to be used as a future reintegration facility for the entire correctional system. Due to the closure, affected staff will be temporarily reassigned to another county correctional facility. This will also reduce overtime and address recruitment issues facing law enforcement agencies across the state and country.

The reallocation of staff will allow the department to fully open all housing units at the HDDC. With county-funded staff at the HDDC, the department will be able to provide more comprehensive mental health and medical care to an inmate with higher care needs.

“The new renovations are designed to make the GHRC a more flexible and robust reintegration facility. The Sheriff looks forward to working with our partners in the County to integrate homeless and mental health services into the reintegration process. These are exciting times in the Sheriff’s Department’s Corrections Bureau. I couldn’t be more proud of the staff and their innovative ideas as they lead us into the future and provide the best reintegration experience for our incarcerated people returning to society. I also hope that with the Board of Supervisors’ approval, we can increase capacity for the homeless in San Bernardino County.” Shannon D. Dicus, Sheriff-Coroner
