Holland Taylor has revealed why she and her longtime girlfriend Sarah Paulson have no plans to get married.
The 81-year-old actress spoke openly about her relationship with Paulson, whom she has been dating since 2015, during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM showRadioAndy on August 8. When Cohen asked Taylor if she and her partner planned to get married, she admitted that she didn’t think so.
“We’ve never talked about it with interest,” she said. “It doesn’t seem to mean to us what it means to many other people.”
However, she made it clear that she and the American Horror Story The star would “certainly” get married “if he wanted to.”
After Cohen raved about the famous couple, Two and a half men The former student then described why she and 49-year-old Paulson are such a good match.
“We really have a wonderful resonance. We are very interested in the same things, and yet we have big differences,” she said. “We have a big generational gap that worries me for her sake.”
However, Taylor acknowledged that the generation gap wasn’t necessarily a problem in their relationship. In fact, she was able to support Paulson in the final moments of her life.
“A lot of the things she’s going through now that are very emotional and important to her, I went through 30 or 40 years ago,” she explained. “And she brings them up and I think, ‘Of course that’s hard.’ Or, ‘Of course that’s great. Of course that’s important to her.'”
She was pleased that Paulson won a Tony Award last June for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play, which recognized her work in Suitable on Broadway. “It was so exciting to see that joy,” Taylor added.
Paulson has previously spoken out about the dynamics of her relationship with Taylor. During an episode of SmartLess In a podcast in May, Paulson said that while she and her partner “spend a lot of time together,” they “don’t really live in the same house.”
“We’ve been together for a long time now and I think part of that has to do with being together when we want to be and not when we don’t want to be,” Paulson added.
When asked if she and Taylor could imagine having separate rooms instead of living in different houses, Paulson clarified that they still often share a bed, noting that they “fall asleep holding hands.”
“I like sleeping next to her. The rest of the time I don’t want to be with her,” she joked when asked if she and Taylor had their own space, adding, “Just kidding.”
She also talked about her different experiences with dating in the past, explaining that Taylor had never been in a “long-term relationship” before Paulson. However, that was not the case with Paulson, as she said that she had been in two relationships that lasted longer than five years before her relationship with Taylor.
“And so, her life, and being her age and kind of not having really lived with anyone for a long time,” she explained. “I think it was a lot to suddenly have me and all my neediness in her space.”
Paulson and Taylor had actually met long before they started dating. While they were performing The view Last November, she revealed that she and Taylor had gone out to dinner with actress Allison Janney and the late screenwriter Buck Henry 10 years before they first started dating. At the time, Henry snapped a photo of the three actors sitting in a Lamborghini parked outside the restaurant and sent them all copies of the photo.
“It hung on my refrigerator in my little apartment in West Hollywood for 10 years,” Paulson said. “It was in my kitchen.”
When asked by television host Joy Behar if she had a crush on Taylor at the time, Paulson denied it, but admitted that “maybe something was going on and I didn’t know it.”
