Incumbent from Northwest Ohio as favorites for re-election

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Incumbents across northwest Ohio seeking re-election to the Ohio Statehouse are considered favorites for their elections this fall, due in part to new district boundaries.

The Ohio Redistricting Commission voted unanimously to adopt new House and Senate maps for this 2023 election cycle. The House and Senate maps can be analyzed online.

The House split gives Republicans a 61-38 advantage, while the Senate split gives Republicans a 23-10 advantage. Due to district boundaries, many seats in northwest Ohio are not expected to have contested general elections.

Republican Sen. Theresa Gavarone likely secured another term in the Senate this week after her opponent dropped out of the race. Paloma De La Fuente, who entered the race at 18, said she decided to put her family’s health first.

The other senator from northwest Ohio seeking re-election, Sen. Bill Reineke of Tiffin, will face electrical engineer Mohamud Jama in the 26th Senate District, with the Republicans leading 70% to 30%.

In northwest Ohio, too, electoral districts are usually drawn in such a way that the incumbent party has the advantage.

Incumbent state Rep. Jon Cross of Findlay lost his primary to Ty Mathews in March. Mathews, also from Findlay, is running in the 83rd District, which is 72% Republican.

The 41st Legislative District, which includes Springfield Township, Maumee and parts of south and west Toledo, will also have a new representative next year. Labor leader Erika White, a Democrat, is running against 26-year-old Republican Josiah Leinbach, who is pursuing a master’s degree at BGSU. White lost to Rep. Derek Merrin in her first attempt to win a seat in the legislature in 2022. The district is now 58% Democratic.
