(From the Kiwanis Club of Findlay)
During the Ohio District Kiwanis Convention held in Toledo on Saturday, Kiwanian Richard Ulmes of Findlay was announced as one of the newest members of the Ohio District Kiwanis Hall of Fame.
Richard “Rich” Ulmes has been a member of Kiwanis since 1993 and joined the Findlay Club in 2016 when he moved to the area from Troy. Ulmes has served in a variety of leadership roles at the club, division and district levels, including serving as president of the Kiwanis Club of Troy in 2001, two terms as Division Lt. Governor and currently serves on the board of directors of the Kiwanis Foundation Ohio District.
As part of his work with Kiwanis, Ulmes has helped open 17 new clubs and has continued to mentor those members and help both individuals and clubs grow. Ulmes is known in Kiwanis for his service-oriented attitude and reputation as a “go-getter.” But Ulmes is not only known for following through with actions; he is also known for recognizing leadership qualities in members that they don’t see themselves, empowering them to get involved, supporting them, and helping them by always being available to help and lending a listening ear.
Also inducted into the class of 2024 were Kiwanian Robert (Bob) Day Jr. of Lima and Jak Hilborn of the Kiwanis Club of Delaware County. The Ohio District Kiwanis Hall of Fame includes Ohio Kiwanians who have been nominated and selected to build better lives and communities through their time, talent, dedication and leadership roles in Kiwanis.
Ulmes is the second Kiwanian from Findlay to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining Richard “Rick” Kidwell in 2021. He was recognized for his service as lieutenant governor, his leadership in developing Brucklacher Memorial Park at the Hancock Historical Museum’s Little Red Schoolhouse, and his role in founding Kiwanis Closets, which provides clothing to schools to support children. The project has inspired projects across the country.
The Ohio Kiwanis Family is comprised of more than 20,000 men, women and children active throughout the state of Ohio in Kiwanis, Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and Aktion clubs.
Founded in 1920, the Kiwanis Club of Findlay is open to people who want to make a difference in their community and the world through service. Individuals interested in learning more about Kiwanis are encouraged to attend a meeting or visit the club’s website, FindlayKiwanis.org. The club meets weekly on Wednesdays starting at 12 noon for lunch at St. Mark’s DOCK.
