South George Mason Drive northbound in Bailey’s Crossroads has been closed for over 12 hours due to a major water main break.

The Fairfax County Police Department reported the break-in yesterday (Tuesday) at 9:39 p.m. near 7313 South George Mason Drive near Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) in the Skyline neighborhood. In a video shared by the department, water can be seen gushing out from under the road.

“The northbound lanes are expected to be closed for an extended period of time while emergency crews work to resolve the situation,” FCPD said. “Expect delays early in the morning.”

The road remained closed during the morning rush hour and crews continued to work to repair the breakdown, the FCPD Public Information Office confirmed shortly after 9 a.m.

The main break was caused by a “faulty valve” connected to a fire hydrant, says Susan Miller, spokeswoman for Fairfax Water. As indicated on the utility’s map of main breaks and leaks, no customers were affected.

Repairs to the line have been completed, but work is still being done on the road. Police say there is no estimate yet as to when repairs might be completed.
