The Math Learning Center has appointed Brinley Stringer as director in July 2024.
Stringer holds a doctorate in mathematics education from San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego. Her research focuses on near-peer mentoring and strengthening student voices in mathematics departments. By positioning students as stakeholders, Stringer examines how near-peer mentoring programs can serve as catalysts and vehicles for departmental change.
She loves teaching introductory mathematics courses, connecting with students, and finding new ways to implement evidence-based teaching methods in the classroom.
Tying all of her goals together, Stringer strives to be a leader for grassroots change. Her overarching goal is to spark institutional change efforts within higher education that support student-centered initiatives.
“The Math Learning Center is a transformative facility for student success,” said Leslie Durham, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “I am thrilled to have Dr. Stringer on board as director. With her background in mathematics education and mentoring, she will lead the Math Learning Center into its next chapter.”
About the Math Learning Center
Founded in 2002, the Math Learning Center is dedicated to improving student learning success in mathematics by promoting mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, especially for non-major students who may have struggled with mathematics in the past.
The Math Learning Center prepares students for future learning and instills confidence as they develop their math skills. Last year, it won two awards: the 2023 Degree Completion Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and the 2023 Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities Beacon Award for Excellence in Student Achievement and Success.
The center coordinates courses MATH 103, 133, 143, 144, and 149. It also offers tutoring for MATH 123, 160, 170, and 175. For more information, visit the Math Learning Center website.
