Mayor Fulop launches free Citymapper Jersey City app to optimize and adapt public transit at one of the country’s busiest transportation hubs
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Department of Transportation are partnering to launch Citymapper JC, a free app that brings all of Jersey City’s transportation services together in one place, helping residents and visitors safely and easily use public transportation in and around Jersey City. The app is tailored for travelers in Jersey City and provides information on local schedules, stations and stops for all bus, PATH, rail, ferry, subway and Via Jersey City trips. Routes are prioritized based on local user preferences, including arrival times, shortest walking distance, cost, travel time and more.
“Jersey City is one of the busiest transportation hubs in the country, and our work over the past decade has created a robust transportation infrastructure that successfully expands our citizens’ access to opportunity and makes our streets safer,” said Mayor Fulop. “The launch of Citymapper underscores our commitment to providing our community with innovative tools to access countless opportunities in the best and most cost-effective way they choose.”
“Jersey City continues to lead the way in investing in systems and technologies that make public transit the preferred option for visitors and residents,” said Mike Vaccarino, head of North American partnerships at Via. “We are excited to expand our long-term partnership through the launch of Citymapper.”
Today’s announcement is part of the Fulop administration’s commitment to expand access to opportunity for its citizens and build safer streets. Cities with strong public transit networks are proven to connect more citizens to jobs, reduce traffic congestion and improve quality of life.
Citymapper’s main features include:
- Customizable trips: Users can visualize all travel options and choose based on what matters most to them – such as speed, fewer transfers, less walking, or cost.
- Bus Tracker: Users see the live location of their bus in real time.
- Avoid disruptions: Users are automatically routed around disruptions and receive real-time updates and alerts on road closures, traffic volumes and service delays.
- Safe cycling: Cyclists have the option to use audio instructions with turn-by-turn directions and select quieter roads for their ride.
The Citymapper app is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.
Citymapper is available in more than 400 cities worldwide and is owned by Via, the TransitTech company that has operated the successful Via Jersey City on-demand transit program since 2020.
