Mechanics warn drivers of high costs for repairing vehicles damaged by floods

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – As Tropical Storm Debby approaches North Carolina, auto repair shops across the east are warning drivers that driving through floodwaters is dangerous – and could cost a fortune.

Mechanics in Greenville want drivers to be cautious when encountering floodwaters possibly caused by Tropical Storm Debby, which is expected to be present along the Carolina coast through the end of the week.

Colby Pugh, Pugh’s service manager, says repairs can be not only dangerous but also expensive.

“You’ll have internal damage, potentially leading to mold and things like that, but also significant engine damage if the water rises high enough to get into the engine. If you’re driving through water and water gets in, the engine can completely lock up,” says Pugh.

According to Pugh, the average cost to repair a flood-damaged vehicle is $300 for an engine flush, $200 for new spark plugs, $60 for an oil change and $30 for a new air filter.

Drivers who think their vehicle can withstand the floods should think again, according to Sarah Midgett.

“I’ve hydroplaned before at very, very high speeds and that’s the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. I wouldn’t do that, that’s a really bad idea,” says Midgett.

Pugh says it’s not worth taking the risk during floods.

“You could be risking your life, you could be risking the lives of other people who would have to come to your aid, and thirdly, you would be spending a lot of money,” Pugh says.
