NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska (KNOP) – The North Platte City Council approved two key agenda items during its meeting Tuesday night.
The first item was a 2011 amendment to the City of North Platte’s comprehensive plan that changed the zoning of certain properties from low-density single-family housing to commercial use. The second item was an ordinance to rezone the land from an A-1 Transitional Agricultural District to a B-2 Commercial District.
Mark Oettinger and his wife own property on South Buffalo Bill Avenue, north of West State Farm Road, across from Pals Brewing Company. They plan to build a boat harbor on the site. Both the amendment and the ordinance have been reviewed several times by the North Platte Planning Commission and City Council due to concerns from residents.
“The neighbors asked me for a couple of things that I wanted to help with,” Oettinger said. “It’s in your site plan. The first was the taxes. Yes, they were right. The best thing for the city would be if this project actually came to fruition because we could potentially accommodate local boats here. If we were in the city, we could generate good tax revenue and be a good partner for the city. That’s why I asked the city to annex it.”
Neighbors had also feared that the Oettingers wanted to build a business park on the 10-acre property. Oettinger made it clear that a business park was never part of his plan. He presented the city council with a map showing the location of his planned building and its distance from surrounding homes.
To further appease residents, Oettinger reduced the size of the project to 2.59 acres. The North Platte City Council passed both the Comprehensive Plan Amendment and the rezoning ordinance.
