Senior center Brent Self on the Rimington Trophy watch list

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –Navy Senior Center Brent Self is one of only 40 centers on the Rimington Trophy Watch List. The Rimington Trophy is awarded each year to the best center in the country.

Self, one of only four players from the American Athletic Conference on the roster, has played in 20 games for the Mids in his career and started 11 of Navy’s 12 games last year.

The Rimington Trophy worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) to narrow down its list to the top 40 centers. PFF evaluates each player on how well he does his job on every play of every game. This play-by-play evaluation allowed the Trophy Committee to create a watch list based on both nominations from schools and data provided by PFF.

Although more than a dozen All-America teams are selected each year, the Rimington Trophy Committee determines the winner based on these three prestigious teams: · Walter Camp Foundation (WCF), Sporting News (SN) and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

Because the selection committee of these three All-America teams can use centers in a “mix” of offensive linemen that includes guards and tackles, their 11-man initial teams can often have two centers. The Rimington Trophy committee’s policy is to count all players who primarily play the center position on their respective teams as centers, even if they are listed as guards or tackles on the All-America teams.

The center with the most first-team votes is declared the winner. If there is a tie in first-team votes, the center with the most second-team votes wins. If there is still a tie, the winner is determined by a majority vote of the Rimington Trophy Committee, which is supplied with data from Pro Football Focus.

Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a unanimous first-team All-America selection for the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982. During that time, he became the only two-time winner of the John Outland Trophy as the nation’s best college interior lineman.

The Rimington Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA awards college football’s most prestigious prizes. Since 1935, over 900 winners have been honored with the 24 awards.

Sixteen NCFAA members will release their preseason watch lists within 15 days as the association leads a coordinated effort to promote the preseason candidates for each award. Below is the remaining calendar of preseason watch lists for 2024:
