Spurs sign free agent guard Malachi Flynn

The San Antonio Spurs added another player to their slew of offseason signings on Wednesday by signing former Detroit Pistons guard Malachi Flynn, according to Shams Charania.

“Free agent guard Malachi Flynn has agreed to a one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs, sources tell The Athletic and Stadium,” Charania wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Flynn – who set a career-high 50 points in April – averaged eight points in 14 minutes per game for the Pistons last season.”

This move helped fill out the Spurs’ roster, but the deal is not guaranteed, and if San Antonio chooses to guarantee it, someone else will have to be taken off the roster.

This is Flynn’s fourth team of his NBA career, as he spent his first full three seasons with the Toronto Raptors as the 29th pick of the 2020 NBA Draft. On December 30, 2023, he was traded to the New York Knicks in a blockbuster deal, but less than two months later, on February 8, he was traded from New York to the Pistons.

Overall, he averaged 5.5 points for all three teams last season, including 41.8 percent from the field and 33.1 percent from distance, as well as 1.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists, and played 12.7 minutes per game in a total of 69 games.

The 26-year-old is one of many new additions to the Spurs’ roster this season, including 39-year-old Chris Paul, a 12-time NBA All-Star (11 All-NBA appearances) and nine-time All-Defensive point guard with a spot on the legendary NBA 75th Anniversary Team, 12-year veteran and 2015 NBA Finals winner Harrison Barnes, and former UConn guard Stephon Castle, whom San Antonio selected fourth in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

These four offseason additions will bring their styles of play to help continue the Spurs’ rebuild after San Antonio went 22-60 in each of the last two seasons. These four will also help continue NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama’s excellent start to his career, as he is without a doubt the catalyst to put the Spurs back on the map.
