Storms devastate northeast Ohio, leaving hundreds of thousands without power

Heavy rain and strong winds swept across northeast Ohio on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Around 400,000 people were without power.

Since 8 a.m. there have been power outages in the following districts:

  • Cuyahoga: 202,524
  • Ashtabula: 12,688
  • Geauga: 26.015
  • Lake: 51,415
  • Lorraine: 24,802
  • Portages: 3,696
  • Summit: 2,398
  • Trumbull: 8,891

A severe weather warning was temporarily in effect for the entire News 5 broadcast area, and a tornado warning was in effect for half a dozen counties.
By the time the storms left our area, trees had fallen, power lines had been downed, and boats had even capsized in the Lorain Marina.

In Mentor, firefighters had to rescue a car after a driver drove around a barrier and hit downed power lines.

There were fallen trees everywhere in Bay Village.

At a home in Bay Village, the entire driveway was blocked by a fallen tree.

On East 127th Street near Bratenahl and East Cleveland, residents were out cleaning up after the storm. A tree had fallen on one person’s porch.

In Parma Heights, the entire roof of an apartment complex on Kingsdale Boulevard was blown off.

In Willoughby Hills, fallen trees on major roadways caused delays for motorists in the area.

In Euclid, a resident’s 1969 Mini Cooper was damaged when a tree fell on its roof.
