Sherrod on Cincinnati.com: “For the women of Ohio, this is not a political issue, it is a personal one.”
COLUMBUS, OH (8/8/24) – On the one-year anniversary of last August’s special election in which Ohioans overwhelmingly voted to protect abortion rights, Sherrod penned an op-ed for Cincinnati.com reminding Ohioans that the fight for abortion rights in Ohio is not over.
Sherrod stands with the majority of Ohioans who believe a woman’s decisions about her health care should be between her and her doctor. Bernie Moreno, on the other hand, supports overriding the will of Ohioans through a national abortion ban and has stated he is “100% pro-life, no exceptions.” He also opposes guaranteeing a woman’s right to access contraception, including birth control pills, has dismissed IVF as a “non-issue,” and has called federal protections for IVF “unnecessary.”
Cincinnati Enquirer: The fight for abortion rights in Ohio is not over | Opinion
Sherrod Brown – August 7, 2024
- One year ago, Ohioans turned out en masse to vote in a special election that was deliberately scheduled under questionable circumstances in the middle of the summer.
- Ohioans saw through this plot and made it clear by an overwhelming majority that they were committed to protecting abortion rights in Ohio. After the August victory, just three months later, voters again turned out in droves and overwhelmingly supported the Abortion Rights Amendment, which would enshrine reproductive rights in Ohio’s constitution.
- Ohioans made their position clear: a woman’s decisions about her health care should be between her and her doctor – not politicians. But despite these decisive victories last year, Our fight for abortion rights and reproductive freedom is not over.
- Politicians, including Bernie Moreno, My opponent and I, who are running for Senate, are working to pass a statewide abortion ban that would overturn the will of the people of Ohio. Even after Ohio voters tried to settle this issue, my opponent continues to double and says his position is “crystal clear” and “hasn’t changed.”
- Just last month, he told CNN that he continues to support a national abortion ban. In his own words, he said he is “100 percent pro-life, no exceptions.” Last November, he donated $100,000 of his own money to block abortion rights and maintain Ohio’s dangerous abortion ban, which has no exceptions for rape or incest.
- Moreno opposes birth control protections, dismisses IVF as a “non-issue,” and calls federal IVF protections “unnecessary.”
- My opponent has made it clear that he thinks he knows better than the people of Ohio or that he simply doesn’t care about our opinions.
- One of the most important aspects of my job is to fight against this kind of arrogance. I have always fought for the freedom of women in Ohio to make their own health care decisions, and I will continue to do so.
- In fact, my wife Connie checked my voting record on abortion rights before our first date. If it hadn’t been 100%, there would have been no first date. I’m happy to say we’ve been married for 20 years.
- For women in Ohio, this is not a political issue, but a personal one.
- Ohio women still remember the fear and stress that followed the overturning of Roe v. Wade. We cannot go back to bans, to women frantically fleeing the state to seek emergency care, to doctors consulting lawyers instead of patients when a woman’s life is at stake.
- And this November, the choice is clear: Either you protect the freedom that Ohioans have demanded, or you face a politician who wants to take that freedom away from them – and who thinks he knows better.
- I am confident that Ohioans will show their support for abortion rights in November, just as they did last year. And with your support, I will continue to fight for these freedoms for women across Ohio in the U.S. Senate.
