The Escanaba Physiotherapy Center uses a harness for therapy

ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – A new physical therapy center in Escanaba is using straps on rails to help patients progress.

The Centre for Physical Therapy and Balance is the first of its kind in the UP

“Prevention is better than cure,” says physical therapist Dr. Jarett Sadler. “This is very important, and if we can catch you in time before you fall, that is our goal.”

Sadler says September is Fall Prevention Month and falls can result in hip fractures or head injuries, especially in older patients. The harness can support up to 1,000 pounds and the goal is to keep the patient focused on fall prevention without fear.

“If we don’t stress your body beyond its normal daily activities, there’s no reason for it to adapt or progress,” Sadler said.

He says it’s important to build balance systems to prevent falls. The harness allows patients to walk on a beam or moving treadmill to test themselves.

Marvin Szukalowski, co-owner of the Fyzical Therapy and Balance Center, says the center is a complement to other therapists and not a competitor.

“Enabling people to live and continue their lives as healthily as possible,” Szukalowski said. “Our goal is to create a healthier community, but at the same time be preventative.”

He says the center helps people who cannot receive necessary surgeries because they cannot find an appointment with a physical therapist.

“It allows the mind and body to work together. It’s not like someone is physically guiding you by the arm. You’re back on your own, allowing the stabilizer muscles to reconnect with the mind and body,” Szukalowski said.

He says they also offer free balance or injury screenings.
