The Seahawks had three centers.
One of them was a proven starter in the NFL for six years. Another has three years left on his rookie contract.
The third one was therefore unnecessary.
Seattle traded former University of Washington All Pac-12 center Nick Harris and a 2026 seventh-round draft pick to Cleveland on Sunday. The Seahawks will get a 2026 sixth-round draft pick back from the Browns.
Harris, 25, returns to where he came from in the spring when he signed a one-year deal with Seattle as a free agent. After his UW career, he spent his first four years in the NFL with the Browns from 2020-23.
The Seahawks welcome 27-year-old former Miami Dolphins center Connor Williams to their team this week.
“He should be coming to town soon,” coach Mike Macdonald said Saturday night in Inglewood, California, after Seattle’s 16-3 victory over the Chargers.
Williams signed a one-year, $3 million guaranteed contract with Seattle last week. The contract could grow to as much as $6 million for Williams through bonuses and game bonuses.
With the money and his experience as a starter in the league, Williams is a starter.
The question is: When?
He is recovering from a torn ACL in his knee in December, when he played his last game for Miami. Williams may not be fully geared up for practice this week, which includes joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville.
Harris began alternating with Olu Oluwatimi as the Seahawks’ first-team center last week in training camp. After the team signed Williams, Harris started in Seattle’s season opener at the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday. Oluwatimi entered the game in the first half.
Oluwatimi, who was selected in the fifth round out of Michigan last year, will be the number two center behind Williams.
