The Seattle Mariners conclude their nine-game home series against the New York Mets at 4:10 p.m. PT on Sunday at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners have a chance to finish their home opener with a 6-3 record and build momentum. Seattle will follow the home opener with a nine-game road trip against the Detroit Tigers (who the Mariners just beat in a series), the powerful Pittsburgh Pirates and the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
Sunday also marks the first time in over 20 years that Sunday Night Baseball will take place in Seattle.
The last time ESPN was in SoDo was on June 6, 2004, and Seattle took on the Chicago White Sox. T-Mobile Park was still called Safeco Field at the time and the Mariners’ roster included some team legends like Ichiro Suzuki, Dan Wilson, Edgar Martinez and Jamie Moyer. The Mariners eventually won the game 5-4.
But as is usually the case when a Seattle team is broadcast in prime time, there was plenty of drama in the final stages of the game.
The White Sox extended their lead to 3-0 by the fourth inning after Joe Crede hit an RBI double and Miguel Olivo hit an RBI single.
Suzuki was the first player to put the Mariners on the scoreboard, scoring on an RBI groundout by John Olerud in the bottom of the fifth inning. Randy Winn hit a home run to deep right field in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring Seattle within one point of Chicago.
Entering the second half of the ninth inning, the Mariners were trailing 4-2 and battling White Sox relief pitcher Billy Koch.
Winn scored another run with an RBI double and Suzuki scored. Bret Boone tied the game 4-4 with an RBI single. Then, two at-bats later, Jolbert Cabrera was forced in by a walk with the bases loaded to give Seattle a 5-4 win.
The Mariners’ victory in 2004 ultimately had little impact on the playoffs. The win improved Seattle’s record to 21-34. The team ultimately finished the season in last place in the American League West with a record of 63-99.
Sunday’s game will have much more at stake in terms of postseason implications. The Mariners entered Sunday tied with the Houston Astros for first place in the AL West.
But with Julio Rodriguez back in the fold and the Mets undoubtedly looking to win at least one game after failing to win in their last two games, Sunday will likely have its own drama that fans will be eagerly awaiting.
