With Chip Trayanum missing some time early in the season due to a hand injury, Kentucky will turn to Demie Sumo-Karngbaye to lead the talented but young and untested running back group.
DSK is in his second year at Kentucky, but his role as the leader of the running back group will expand early in the season with Trayanum out. DSK played most of his snaps last season as a slot receiver, but Mark Stoops had high praise for his senior running back on his radio show.
“You’ve seen the progression, the normal progression, the maturation process that happens as guys stay in a program longer and longer, they get better, they understand our system and you see that with him, so we have a lot of confidence in him,” Stoops said. “He was neck and neck with Chip when he got hurt. We considered them both starters.”
DSK will lead a group that includes redshirt freshman Jamarion Wilcox and true freshman Jason Patterson.
Last year, DSK finished the season as a running back with 20 carries for 139 yards and a touchdown, while also catching a total of 14 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Although he doesn’t have a ton of experience as a running back in Lexington, the coaches seem really excited about DSK’s abilities and are confident that he can handle the challenge of being a lead back.
