Topeka-based Harley Davidson gives riders advice

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – “My father lived to be 90 years old. He rode motorcycles from the age of 18 until he was 87 and then died of cancer,” said Bruce Zimmerman, manager of Historic Harley Davidson of Topeka.

Bruce Zimmermann’s father rode motorcycles all his life and never suffered a scratch.

“He was never in a big hurry and always kept an eye on the traffic around him. He made sure he was always ready to pull over and get out of harm’s way if needed,” Zimmerman said.

Motorcycle accidents have been making headlines lately. The Riding Academy at Historic Harley Davidson of Topeka will show you how to ride safely.

“You will be trained by several professional trainers. Upon completion, you will receive basic motorcycle safety training. You will learn how to best operate your motorcycle safely on the road,” said Zimmerman.

Harley Davidson employees say you should always be aware of your surroundings.

“When you ride a motorcycle, you always have to do your best. Always look for a way out when there is a problem in front of you or next to you. What is your best option to avoid whatever might happen,” Zimmerman said.

Make sure you always wear the right safety equipment when cycling.

“Helmets, gloves, long pants and boots above the ankles. There are now jackets that are padded in the areas of the human body that need protection,” Zimmerman said.

Of course, follow the traffic rules.

“Drive slowly and always assume that everyone else around you is going to do the wrong thing and know what you are going to do to do the right thing and get out of trouble. Take your time and enjoy the ride,” Zimmerman said.
