Update: Repairs to collapsed storm drain on Port Chester street could take weeks

The collapse, initially thought to be a sinkhole, occurred in Port Chester on North Regent Street near the intersection with Clermont Avenue, where a section of the village’s main stormwater management system failed, village officials said Thursday, Aug. 8.

Officials said it is not known how long the collapse began, but the behavior of rainwater in the area over the past week indicated that something was wrong.

Part of the drain has now been secured and covered and will remain so over the weekend to protect it from the heavy rain forecast to drench the region. Repair work will then begin on Monday 12 August.

According to village officials, the drain will be rebuilt using a cemented form that mimics and connects to the parts of the drain on either side of the collapsed section.

Repairs and repaving of the road are expected to take about two weeks, officials said, adding that residents in the area will have to park on side streets if their driveways are inaccessible.

While repairs are completed, Port Chester Police will set up detours for motorists in the area.
