Victim of car theft had to pay to get his confiscated vehicle back

JACKSON, Mississippi (WLBT/Gray News) – A car theft victim in Mississippi says he is frustrated after having to go through a lengthy process to get his car and belongings back from police.

Micheal Ransom says it was a normal night at work at the local Shell gas station when everything turned into a nightmare.

According to Ransom, he was standing outside the store during a smoke break on July 25 when he noticed two men approaching him.

“He had his accomplice attack me and I had no choice but to surrender,” Ransom said.

Ransom says one of the men pointed a gun at him and demanded the keys to his 2004 Nissan Armada.

The police were then called to the gas station.

Ransom said Jackson police eventually found his vehicle, but he was also given a bill.

“I had to drive downtown and pay the tow fee. I thought to myself, ‘You tow my car, I have to drive downtown and pay the tow fee and then come back here and get my car?'” he said. “It doesn’t make sense. I still don’t know where my phone is. I know the last time it beeped was in the evidence room downtown. I have no idea what the police have on my vehicle or what the criminals have.”

After paying more than $150, Ransom got his car back, but other items such as his wallet and identification are still pending.

“I don’t know if I need to renew my driver’s license, buy a new phone or apply for a new Social Security card. I don’t know anything about that,” he said.

According to Jackson Deputy Police Chief Sequerna Banks, the policy is that anyone whose car is in storage is responsible for all storage and towing fees, regardless of the circumstances.

She said the department waives those fees in certain situations.

The department said officers are continuing their investigation into the original call about the stolen vehicle.
